Please join the AST Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access to Life (IDEAL) Committee in revealing the rich Black culture that courses through the fiber of our vibrant transplant community. As part of our ongoing educational series, we welcome pioneer and leader in transplantation Dr. Velma Scantlebury, with the objective of discussing the impact of past, present, and future diversity challenges in transplantation.

Velma P. Scantlebury, M.D, FACS recently retired from Christiana Care’s Kidney Transplant Program as the Director of Outpatient Clinics.
She is currently Professor of Surgery at Texas Christian University (TCU) Medical School. Dr. Scantlebury also serves as a medical advisor to various organizations as well as being a member of the ASTS BAR Task Force, NKF Health Equity Advisory Committee and the American Kidney Fund Health Equity Coalition. She has been named to both the “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Doctors in America” lists multiple times.
Dr. Scantlebury earned her medical degree from Columbia University. She was an intern and resident in general surgery at Harlem Hospital. She completed her fellowship training in transplantation surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and then joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as an assistant professor of surgery in 1989. She rose to associate professor prior to the University of South Alabama’s Regional Transplant Center where she served as Professor of Surgery, Director of the Kidney Transplant Program and Assistant Dean of Community Education.
