AST Board of Elections Election Results

The American Society of Transplantation (AST) announced its newly elected 2021-2022 Board Members, including its new President, President-Elect, Secretary, and Councilors-at-Large. The results were announced during the 2021 AST Town Hall, held virtually at the American Transplant Congress (ATC) on June 7, 2021.

Dr. John Gill assumed the role of AST President after serving as the Society’s President-Elect. Dr. Gill is a nephrologist and established clinical outcomes and health services researcher, serving as Professor of Medicine with tenure at the University of British Columbia, Division of Nephrology, Saint Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. Prior to his presidential roles, Dr. Gill served as AST Treasurer and Councilor-at-Large.

Dr. Richard Formica, a nephrologist and Director of Transplant Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, previously held the position of AST president. Dr. Formica has transitioned into his role of AST Past President.

Dr. Deepali Kumar was elected as AST President-Elect and will serve in this capacity until June 2022, when she will become President. Dr. Kumar is the Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases at the University of Toronto’s Ajmera Transplant Centre and Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Previously, Dr. Kumar served as AST Secretary and Councilor-at-Large.

Dr. Jon Kobashigawa was elected as AST Secretary. Before assuming this position, he served as a Councilor-at-Large on the AST Board of Directors from 2016-2019. Dr. Kobashigawa serves as the Director of the Advanced Heart Disease Section and Director of the Heart Transplant Program at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute.

Three new Councilors-at-Large were also announced. Joining the Board are Drs. Marie Chisholm-Burns (University of Tennessee Health Science Center), Mandy Ford (Emory University School of Medicine), and Vineeta Kumar (University of Alabama in Birmingham).

AST Past President, Dr. Emily Blumberg, of the University of Pennsylvania, completed her term. Three Councilors-at-Large also rolled off the Board of Directors: Drs. Howard Gebel (Emory University School of Medicine), Jonathan Maltzman (Stanford University), and Lisa Potter (University of Chicago Medical Center).
